New Construction Project for the Pingtung Industry Development and Inspection Center of the National Animal Industry Foundation (Competition Entry)

A competition held in December 2020. Regrettably, we were unable to win the favor of the client and the committee.

The site is located on the periphery of the Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park (PABP), situated at a street corner facing three roads. One side borders the park, while the other overlooks a landscape of gridded agricultural fields.

As the existing inspection center had become outdated and insufficient for current needs, the new center building project in the PABP was initiated. The new facility bears the responsibility of ensuring meat safety for the public while also aiming to introduce more functions for industrial research and exchange.

Although the volume of the new building is not large, it serves as both a boundary and a visual focal point for the street corner.

In our design, two consecutive L-shaped volumes wrap around an atrium to form a courtyard configuration. The corner is gently lifted to alleviate the sense of mass at the street junction, creating a dynamic facade while drawing in the surrounding environment. This connects the lobby with the atrium, allowing interior and exterior spaces to permeate each other—much like the interaction and exchange between people.

The perforated metal double-skin walls, segmented into blocks around the perimeter, represent a transformation and encoding of the adjacent agricultural landscape. Both solid and void, clear yet blurred, it serves as an architectural reflection at the boundary between the two landscapes: the agricultural and the industrial park.
